Myanmar is set to install automatic identification system (AIS) on its coastal and fishing vessels to ensure maritime security, according to the Department of Marine Administration (DMA), Xinhua reported.

To control AIS and exchange navigation information, AIS stations will be established at 19 jetties and the range of the AIS would stretch to 48-80 kilometres.

Such installations will begin at the end of this year and all inland water transport ferries and coastal ships will have AIS by 2021, the department said, adding that the AIS would also help track illegal activities of ships.
