Myanmar Vice President Dr Sai Mauk Kham and an accompanying delegation have just finished a diplomatic visit to Thailand where he discussed cooperation between the two countries, according to Myawady on February 26.
The vice president was accompanied by Chief Minister of Kayah State U Khin Maung Oo, deputy ministers U Tin Oo Lwin, Dr Win Myint, U Htin Aung and Dr Sai Kyaw Ohn and departmental officials, flying in to Bangkok on February 25.
The vice president met with Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha at the government guest house in Bangkok. They discussed the promotion of diplomatic relations and cooperation between the two countries, education, health, opening border gates, concerns regarding Myanmar migrant workers, and tourism.
Migrant rights issues have been in the news over the last year after the United States downgraded Thailand’s ranking in its Trafficking in Persons report to Tier 3, the lowest level. A large percentage of migrant workers used in the Thai fishing industry are Myanmar nationals.
The vice president and party visited Wat Paknam temple in Phasi Charoen and paid homage to the presiding monk. He also met the families of Myanmar Embassy staff and students at Myanmar ambassador’s house.
Analysts have noted an improved relationship between the two countries in the wake of Thailand’s May 2014 military coup, including the strengthening of military ties.
