Residents of Meiktila, torn by interreligious strife in 2013, have petitioned the government to allow them to reintegrate, although some remain skeptical about prospects for peace, reports Religion News on February 26.
Clashes between Buddhists and Muslims in 2013 led to the destruction of 800 homes and at least 40 people dead.
Affected residents submitted letters to President U Thein Sein, opposition leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and Parliament Speaker Thura U Shwe Mann outlining their request but say they are still awaiting a response as of the end of February.
Those Muslim and Buddhist residents who lost their homes were initially placed in shared temporary housing after the riots. Later, the government segregated the homeless residents by religion and sent them to different camps.
